Text-adventure compatibility batch (2026-10-23)
================================================

Build: ManiOS 0.26.0, source commit 55a788a1f78d53636604f4c4d114401cd34b909b.
Kernel: build/manios-zkt.elf, SHA-256
8599009f47058371966bf01f622ce6991fccf7229de26742bc43c72639cdd7cd.
Environment: QEMU i386, CPU 486, 64 MiB RAM, serial console, fresh 16 MiB
FAT16 image per case. Downloads, binaries and disk images are not committed.

The kernel in this batch includes the dosrun change that implements BIOS
INT 10h AH=06h/07h text-window scrolling and scrolls the active text page
when DOS console output reaches the bottom row. The i686-elf cross compiler
was absent, so the kernel was linked with the host gcc -m32 fallback.

Interpreter

Command: dosrun C:/ZIP.EXE ZORK1.Z3

Observed:
- The title and "West of House" room text render.
- look, open mailbox, read leaflet, north, inventory and score work.
- save prompts for a file name; ZORK1.SAV is written (13,330 bytes) and
  the game reports OK.
- quit, y and the final "[Hit any key to exit.]" key return to manios%.
- A fresh boot and restore of ZORK1.SAV reports OK; look returns to West of
  House.
- The status line still clips its right side (Score/Moves); this is cosmetic
  for the tested commands.
- A black rectangle remains at the bottom-right of the text screen.

Command: dosrun C:/ADVENTUR.EXE

Observed:
- The welcome screen appears and the game asks "Would you like
  instructions?".
- The answer is read as a 20-character FORTRAN record. "N" followed by 19
spaces is accepted; an unpadded n, N, no or NO is rejected with "Please
  answer the question.".
- look, inventory, north, quit and y work.
- The quit message reports 32 of a possible 350 points in 4 turns and
  returns to manios%.

Planetfall (Infocom Sampler demo)
---------------------------------
Status: Partial
Story: IF Archive infocom/demos sampler1_R26.z3, 112,610 bytes.
SHA-256 8a333e2381095439acb66db43385f4f94ba5fe63c478c95079ae764bacd2942b
This is the official 1984 Infocom Sampler, containing a Planetfall sample
alongside Zork I, Infidel and The Witness. The full commercial Planetfall
story was neither tested nor committed.

Commands:
  dosrun C:/ZIP.EXE SAMPLE.Z3
  planet
  dosrun C:/JZIP.EXE SAMPLE.Z3
  planet

Observed:
- The sampler starts under ZIP 2.00 and JZIP and renders the introduction
  and the Hit RETURN prompt.
- Entering "planet" selects the Planetfall sample.
- Under ZIP the text window is cleared to blue and the sample text is not
readable. Under JZIP only the first line ("Briefly, here are the
instructions for Planetfall...") appears at the bottom and the sample
  does not advance.
- Result: Partial. Selection works, but the Planetfall sample is not
playable through the tested interpreter/display path. Full Planetfall
  gameplay is unverified.

Other interpreters
-------------------
- JZIP: starts Zork I and the sampler, but status-line and screen
formatting are poor and the sampler stalls after its first sample line.
- Frotz 2.55 and 2.53: stop at OUT 0043h (PIT channel 0 control) before
  the game.
- DZIP: stops at OUT 00F0h.

Remaining limitations
---------------------
- Zork I status line clips Score/Moves at the right edge.
- Bottom-right black rectangle in the text display.
- Frotz and DZIP need additional PIT/FPU or hardware support.
- Full Planetfall is blocked by licensing; only the official sampler demo
  was used.
- The kernel was linked with the host gcc fallback, not the missing
  i686-elf cross toolchain.
