ManiOS 0.26.0 — dosprograms.info.tt applications batch — 2026-10-23

Build and environment
---------------------
- Tested source: `c10d9f0` ("Add DOS EXEC child processes and prepare ManiOS 0.26.0"), VERSION 0.26.0, clean tree.
- Kernel: build/manios-zkt.elf, SHA256 5553a1934d19165f34dcea365ffcb4aaec0d11b81877521da23ec889726fc88c.
- Environment: QEMU 10.0.13 i386, CPU 486, 64 MiB RAM, serial console; one 16 MiB FAT16 IDE image per package, fresh disposable copy per case, 6-10 s observation limit. A timeout is a bounded observation, not proof of a hang.
- No program binaries, ZIPs or disk images are committed. Downloads were made on 2026-10-23 from the catalog page and its links.
- No DOS runtime source changes were made during this batch.

Scope
-----
Ten packages from https://dosprograms.info.tt/apps.htm were downloaded, placed on FAT16 images and run. One is Working (Figlet), three are Partial (Directory Freedom, VIEW, EDITV), one archived package is Broken (AUMenu, Unix edition) and five are Unsupported (Costa GUI, DATES, Cash Register, MinEd, As-Easy-As). VIEWSEEK and BATCHCNV were exercised as auxiliary programs of the VIEW package.

Results
-------
| Application | Version / media | Status | Observed result |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Directory Freedom | 4.61B (1999) | **Partial** | Directory listing, version 4.61B and the F1-F10 menu render; no navigation, file operation or exit was exercised. Shell text remains in cells the program did not overwrite. |
| Costa GUI | 1.8.0 | **Unsupported** | The launcher prints `DESKTOP.EXE not found.` in both root and `C:/COSTA/` layouts. Running `DESKTOP.EXE` directly stops on `IN AL,21h` (port 0021h) at `1D20:70B6`; the GUI never starts. |
| AUMenu | 1.4.3a archive; reports 1.4.3b Unix edition | **Broken** | The archived ZIP is the Unix edition: it displays `AUMenu for Unix 1.4.3b` and a $79 registration screen, not the DOS menu. The free DOS build was not obtained. |
| VIEW | 17.2 | **Partial** | Opens the 23-page `VIEW.DOC` and renders page 1 with the header and status bar; Esc returns to the shell. A short `INPUT.TXT` shows `Lines 1 to 3 of 3`, but its text overlaps the header and shell remnants remain. Paging/cursor navigation was not exercised. |
| DATES | 2002.08 | **Unsupported** | Stops during startup on `IN AL,21h` (port 0021h) at `161C:4006`; no date list or usage text is printed. |
| Cash Register | 7.1j | **Unsupported** | `POS.EXE` stops during startup on `IN AL,21h` (port 0021h) at `718A:3E98`; no register screen is reached. |
| Figlet | 2.2 (DOS port, 1997) | **Working** | Renders the correct `ManiOS` standard-font banner from `C:/fonts/standard`; `-I 1` prints `20200`. |
| EDITV | 4.1 (US) | **Partial** | Opens `INPUT.TXT`, displays all three lines and accepts typed text (`Z` appears at 1:1). Save and reopen are unverified because F2 cannot be delivered on the serial console. |
| MinEd | 2022.27 | **Unsupported** | DJGPP/go32 extender reports `Load error: no DPMI - Get csdpmi*b.zip`; no editor screen. |
| As-Easy-As | 5.7 | **Unsupported** | Stops in FPU detection on `OUT 0F0h` at `3704:3004`; the following bytes are `FNINIT` (`DB E3`) and `FSTSW` (`D9 3F`). No worksheet is displayed. |

Auxiliary checks
----------------
### VIEWSEEK 3.1 (VIEW package)

- Command: `dosrun C:/VIEWSEEK.EXE INPUT.TXT alpha`
- Observed: searches `INPUT.TXT` for `alpha` (present) but reports no matching files, then exits with `run-time error R6001 - null pointer assignment`.
- Not counted as a VIEW application result; the failure may depend on the missing DOS `PATH`/VIEW registration environment.

### view-batchcnv

- Command: `dosrun C:/BATCHCNV.EXE INPUT.TXT OUT /a`
- Observed: reports `Converting INPUT.TXT to OUT\INPUT.TXT` and `Completed`, but no file appears in OUT (mtools directory listing empty).
- Note: Not counted as a Working VIEW task. Whether the missing output is a path/current-directory effect or a runtime file-creation defect was not isolated.

Runtime gaps exposed
---------------------
### PIC mask read (`IN AL,21h`, port 0021h)

- Affected: Costa DESKTOP.EXE 1.8.0, DATES 2002.08, Cash Register 7.1j
- All three stop on the same startup pattern: `mov [..],ah; mov dx,21h; cli; in al,dx; cmp ah,0FCh; jne +3; and al,0FBh`. The runtime rejects port reads other than its bounded 8254/video models.

### x87/FPU detection (`OUT 0F0h`, `FNINIT`, `FSTSW`)

- Affected: As-Easy-As 5.7
- Stops at `OUT 0F0h` before `DB E3` (`FNINIT`) and `D9 3F` (`FSTSW`). Consistent with Ability Plus 3.0, which stops on x87 `FNINIT`.

### DPMI / 32-bit DOS extender

- Affected: MinEd 2022.27
- The DJGPP/go32 stub asks for a DPMI host: `Load error: no DPMI - Get csdpmi*b.zip`.

### Text-screen clearing/scrolling

- Affected: Directory Freedom 4.61B, VIEW 17.2
- Both leave ManiOS shell/boot text in the headers and clear rows; VIEW short-file rendering overlaps the header with the document. This is the known incomplete BIOS text scrolling described in `dosrun.md`.

Conclusion
----------
Ten catalog packages were exercised. Figlet 2.2 completes a real banner-generation task and is Working. Directory Freedom, VIEW and EDITV are Partial. The AUMenu archive is Broken as shipped (Unix edition). Costa GUI, DATES, Cash Register, MinEd and As-Easy-As are Unsupported because they require a PIC read, x87/FPU instructions or DPMI. The dominant new blocker is the PIC mask read, which stops three unrelated applications in their startup code.

Raw per-case transcripts and screen dumps remain in the workspace batch directory; the committed JSON keeps cleaned transcripts, checks and hashes. Screenshots are in docs/compatibility/.
